Next weekend’s Sha Tin meeting could be on the move, with the Jockey Club waiting on confirmation from government officials on when the 10-race card will be run.

The Sha Tin fixture is scheduled for Sunday, but that could change with the state funeral for Hong Kong’s first chief executive, Tung Chee-hwa, set to be held that day.

“We have no inside information. We don’t know if something will happen,” Jockey Club chief executive Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges said on Sunday.

“We wait for the decision whenever it is made and we will then make the right step. We have done scenario plans.”

A source told the South China Morning Post the club would be “guided by our government, and if the wake is on Saturday and the funeral on Sunday we would postpone the race meeting out of respect”.

Meanwhile, champion jockey Zac Purton made it three doubles from the opening three meetings of the season when he booted home Ruby Thrive and Nyx Gluck at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Purton helped trainer Manfred Man Ka-leung secure a double in the first two races when Ruby Thrive broke through in the Class Four Hing Wah Handicap (1,000m), before capping his brace in the closing Class Three Yiu Tung Handicap (1,400m) aboard Nyx Gluck.

The Danny Shum Chap-shing-trained Nyx Gluck backed up his impressive last-start triumph at the end of last term to storm home from midfield and beat Aerovolanic by a length and a quarter.

“It was a nice win, he obviously had a light weight and a good gate, but he had to take another step from what he was doing last season,” Purton said.

“They went hard and had him out of his comfort zone a little bit. He had to shoulder his way through but once he balanced up, he got to the line nicely.”

Nyx Gluck was also the second leg of a double for Shum, who struck earlier with Happy Shooter in the second section of the Class Four Lok Wah Handicap (1,400m).

Sent forward by Purton to vie for the lead with Looking Bright, Ruby Thrive kept on strongly to deny the fast-finishing Precision Mind by half a length.

The Anders four-year-old scored his first victory at his fifth start and Man is hopeful there is more to come.

“He’s only four years old and I think he can still improve. I think he can also handle 1,200m, he just needs a bit of time,” Man said.

Man combined with jockey Luke Ferraris and Rattan Galaxy to win the opener, the first section of the Class Five Hong Tung Handicap (1,400m). The Exceed And Excel gelding recorded his first victory at start 13 when he fought strongly on the speed to beat The All Rounder by a neck.

“It’s been difficult for him to win because he’s been too nervous,” Man said. “I think the rating and the draw helped him a lot. I hope [he can win more races] – it’s hard to say.”

Jockey Derek Leung Ka-chun joined Purton, Shum and Man with a double when he won on the Cody Mo Wai-kit-trained Draco and David Hayes’ Absolute Awakened.
