Mark Newnham has made a strong start to the new season and will be looking to keep the momentum rolling with a team that includes promising Australian import Money Games at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Newnham has sent out two winners from 10 runners to start a campaign that is likely to see a number of his string heading towards a hugely competitive four-year-old series.

Joyful Joy was the first of Newnham’s 67-strong arsenal to strike this season and is likely to head down the Classic Mile route, while new recruit Money Games will start his journey in the Class Three Yiu Tung Handicap (1,400m).

The son of Casino Prince was flawless in two Australian starts for trainer Scott Singleton, securing wins at Tamworth and Scone before being imported to Hong Kong.

Drawing barrier 13 on local debut will not make his task any easier, but the talent is clearly there and he was a Conghua turf trial winner earlier this month.

“It has taken him a while and you don’t get too many that win first time out as PP’s, but he has done everything right and is ready to go to the races now,” Newnham said.

“He trialled well at Conghua last week, albeit in a slow time, so I’d expect him to improve for the run on Sunday.”

The Classic Series is unlikely for Newnham’s speedster Ever Luck, but he is another young horse who will be looking to rate higher this season and he gets rolling in the Class Three Wah Fu Handicap (1,000m).

A dual winner last campaign, including his remarkable debut victory where he hung dramatically off the bend before straightening up and flying home to salute, he also dropped back to win over 1,000m later in the season.

He ended the campaign with two low-key efforts, but he has drawn well in 12 for his reappearance and Newnham is hoping any issues from last season are now a distant memory.

“He has always had above-average ability – he does tend to do a few things wrong but I think we’ve pretty much ironed out now with him,” Newnham said.

“He finds a very strong Class Three over the 1,000m on Sunday, but he’s a horse of very high speed and having a high draw will be important to his chance.”

Newnham will field a team of nine at Sha Tin on Sunday and plenty have form claims, with Oldtown another stand-out in the first section of the Class Four Lok Wah Handicap (1,200m).

Heavily backed to win at Sha Tin three starts ago, he ended the season with a pair of respectable efforts in defeat and a strong trial before his reappearance has left Newnham hopeful, though a draw in 13 makes his task that bit tougher.

“He trialled well last week and he’s going into the race in good form. He is another where having a good draw would have really helped him and he will need to be at his best,” Newnham said.
