The first two meetings of the new season have been run and won and racing continues at Sha Tin on Sunday with a competitive 10-race card.

Jay Rooney is in the hot seat to provide an extended rundown of his selections.

Race 1 – Class Five Hong Tung Handicap (1,400m) – first section

Rattan Galaxy was narrowly beaten at the end of last season after leading from gate 14 and can get a more favourable run from barrier two here.

Race 2 – Class Four Hing Wah Handicap (1,000m)

Looking Bright went close to breaking through last term with a pair of seconds and should get his chance here on the speed from a good draw.

Race 3 – Class Five Hong Tung Handicap (1,400m) – second section

He Was Me won twice in this grade towards the end of last season and looks ready to go after a solid trial win at Conghua.

Race 4 – Class Four Lok Wah Handicap (1,200m) – first section

In what looks a wide-open race, Mighty Fighter could be a value play. The Ricky Yiu Poon-fai-trained gelding ran some handy races last term and looks to have improved judging by his recent trial.

Race 5 – Class Four Lok Wah Handicap (1,200m) – second section

Spirited Steed caught the eye when flashing home for a close second at the end of last season and can be an improver in his four-year-old season.

Race 6 – Class Four Tung Wah Group Of Hospitals (1,600m)

Gorgeous Victory was knocking on the door to break through last campaign and just needs a bit of Zac Purton magic to overcome barrier 11.

Race 7 – Class Four Mei Tung Handicap (1,400m)

Storm Mirror had excuses in his three defeats last term and has trialled well ahead of his return. He just needs an ounce of luck from gate 13 to break through.

Race 8 – Class Three Wah Fu Handicap (1,000m)

Solid State scored one of the best wins by an import on debut in Hong Kong at the end of last season. He rises in weight and drops back to 1,000m, but he has drawn the right side of the straight track and trialled well.

Race 9 – Class Three Oi Tung Handicap (1,200m)

Lucy In The Sky was heavily backed last week and only faded in the last 100m to run a solid fourth. He drops 8lb on that run with Nichola Yuen Hang-yiu’s claim in play and can improve further.

Race 10 – Class Three Yiu Tung Handicap (1,400m)

Flying Knight comes off a strong end to his campaign and looks well placed down in the weights from a good draw.
