China’s top legislative body passed a resolution on November 11, 2020, giving Hong Kong government power to unseat four opposition lawmakers without having to go through the city’s courts. Under the decision by the National People’s Congress Standing Committee, Alvin Yeung Ngok-kiu, Kwok Ka-ki and Dennis Kwok and Kenneth Leung were disqualified for promoting Hong Kong independence and engaging in acts threatening national security. Following their disqualification, Democratic Party chairman’s Wu Chi-wai said all opposition lawmakers will resign together. In response to the pan-democrats’ threat to quit all at once, Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam denied that would turn Legco into a “rubber-stamp” legislature, that is, an organisation that gives automatic approval or authorisation to the decisions of others, without proper consideration.
