Legislative Council of Hong Kong

Carrie Lam comments on the removal of four Hong Kong opposition lawmakers

Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam has said that lawmakers who are unable to uphold the Basic Law, the city’s mini-constitution, and pledge allegiance to Hong Kong SAR” should be disqualified from the Legislative Council. She was speaking at a press conference on November 11, 2020, hours after four opposition members of Legco were removed. Their removal came after China’s top legislative body passed a resolution paving the way for Hong Kong authorities to unseat politicians for specific offences, including promoting Hong Kong independence and engaging in acts threatening national security. The lawmakers involved were Alvin Yeung, Kwok Ka-ki, Dennis Kwok and Kenneth Leung. They had already been barred from running in Legislative Council elections, which were postponed by officials cited the coronavirus pandemic. The authorities accuse the four of calling on foreign governments to sanction Beijing and Hong Kong.
