Philippine naval officials said on April 15, 2025, that five aquatic drones retrieved from its territorial waters were likely to be of Chinese origin. The device that was “most intact” when found carried a Chinese Telecom SIM card, according to a Philippine Navy spokesman. He said the devices were used to collect mapping data for commercial and military use. Three of the drones were recovered in 2024 and the other two were found by local fishermen in 2022.
