Dylan Browne McMonagle will sign off his three-month stint in Hong Kong with four chances at Happy Valley on Wednesday, after a successful effort that has seen him secure 10 wins so far.
The Irish champion jockey has drawn praise from plenty of top trainers, including Ricky Yiu Poon-fai and John Size, and is hoping to make a return to Hong Kong in the future following a productive stint.
“It’s been a good experience – I’ve made a lot of good contacts and I’ve learned plenty, so I’ll be looking forward to coming back again hopefully,” Browne McMonagle said.
“When I was coming here, I thought if I could take a few things home with me and learn something and get one winner, it would be a bonus – so to get ten was something I didn’t really think was going to happen, so we’ll definitely be happy with that.”
Browne McMonagle has taken plenty of experience from the world’s toughest jurisdiction – both on and off the track.
“I think preparation is a big thing here and being prepared for the coming weeks and being a step ahead of the schedule – so going home, everything’s a lot more laid back, so hopefully I’ll be sharper that way,” said Browne McMonagle.

“Also on the track, the speed is quick, the tempo is important, positioning is key. So I’m sure with the speed here, it’s going to happen a little bit slower for me at home hopefully.”
Browne McMonagle is also grateful for the continued support from 13-time Hong Kong champion trainer Size.
“From day dot, he was giving me plenty of rides and giving me the opportunities that I could win on, which is important and a big thanks to him for getting me on the board early – it’s definitely helped my time here,” Browne McMonagle said.
His Wednesday chances are headlined by Solid Win in the Class Three Fanling Handicap (1,650m), where the pair look to go back to back after their last start victory over the course and distance.
“He’s a very consistent horse, winning at two of his last three. He likes the Valley and he’s got a good draw, so hopefully if he gets a good slot he can be competitive; it’s a hot race, so we’ll see how they go,” Browne McMonagle said.
The reliable Starspangledbanner galloper has proven adaptable at the city circuit, and Browne McMonagle will use that to his advantage when carrying 134lb.

“He’s straightforward, he kind of relaxes wherever you put him – but he’s got a good turn of foot, which you need at the Valley. It wouldn’t really matter what the tempo is like. He can go forward if it’s slow, and he can take the time otherwise – so he’s versatile that way – he’s an easy ride,” said Browne McMonagle.
Browne McMonagle also gets the ride on Silver Spurs for the first time in the third section of the Class Four Kwai Chung Handicap (1,200m) and is thrilled to be combining with Caspar Fownes, who currently leads the trainers’ championship with 43 wins.
The two-time winner has drawn slightly better this start with gate eight, and Browne McMonagle will be looking to utilise his early speed.
“Casper, he’s electric around the Valley, and his horses are going good, so fingers crossed – I’m glad to be getting on one of his,” said Browne McMonagle.
“He’ll have to work as hard to get across, but he’s a quick horse and if he gets a good run around without too much pressure, hopefully he can run well.”

Conspiracy Witness was doing his best work late over 1,800m last start and will step up in distance when he contests the Class Five Tuen Mun Handicap (2,200m).
“He’s been consistent, he’s improving. He’s drawn wide but it doesn’t really matter because he comes back anyway,” said Browne McMonagle.
“The speed will be key to him. If there’s a good tempo on, it’ll help him come home strong. He’s a big galloper and definitely if he gets into a good rhythm, he’ll be hitting the line strong.”
Browne McMonagle’s book is rounded out by Phoenix Light who returns to Happy Valley for the first time since April 2024 in the first section of the Class Four Kwai Chung Handicap.
“He’s a consistent horse. He was a bit unlucky last time at Sha Tin when I rode him. I got stuck behind a wall and he didn’t really let down a hundred per cent. Hopefully if he gets a good run around he can go close as well,” Browne McMonagle said.
