Patch Of Stars continued his march up the grades with a clinical performance to win the Class Two Lukfook Jewellery Cup (1,200m) at Sha Tin on Saturday.

The Manfred Man Ka-leung-trained galloper came into his own towards the back end of last season, winning three of his four races to close out the campaign.

He bounced back from a below-par return with a Class Three win over course and distance last month and shrugged off both a 7lb rise in the weights and a hike in class without breaking much of a sweat.

Always travelling well in fourth one off the fence, Zac Purton oozed confidence coming into the straight and the pair sauntered into the lead at the 300m pole, before shooting away into an unassailable lead over a fast-finishing Invincible Shield.

The return to 1,200m has worked the oracle in his recent starts and Man will not be looking to step up his mount in trip any time soon.

ā€œIt was his first run in Class Two and he was drawn stall nine, so before I was a bit worried about him being wide,ā€ said Man.

ā€œI think 1,200m is good for him, because in Class Three 1,400m he was favourite twice and was only fourth and fifth. Back at 1,200m, he won a Class Three and was promoted today and won again, so I think it’s the best distance for him.ā€

With that in mind, any thoughts of a tilt at the Classic Series, which is contested over the mile distance and beyond, have been firmly put on ice.

Trainer Manfred Man and jockey Zac Purton are all smiles after Patch Of Stars’ win.

The win was part of a double on the day for Man, who also watched Double Win lash home to collect the Class Four Lukfook Jewellery Love Is Beauty Collection Handicap (2,000m).

It was a second win of the campaign for Hollie Doyle, who only had one behind turning out of the pack and had a mountain to climb. Once in the straight, Double Win got up a real head of steam to mow down Supreme Mastermind in the dying strides for a half-length victory.

Patch Of Stars’ win was the second leg of a Purton treble, with Supreme Agility getting up in the nick of time to win the Class Four Lukfook Jewellery Heirloom Fortune Collection Handicap (1,650m).

It was a classic Purton ride, with Supreme Agility needing to pass a wall of horses in the straight with space at a premium. The champion jockey never panicked, scything his way through the field and grabbing California Star in the final stride to win by a nose, helping trainer Pierre Ng Pang-chi secure a double after he struck earlier with On The Lash in the Class Five Lukfook Jewellery Wedding Collection Handicap (1,800m).

Supreme Agility gets up on the inside to win under Zac Purton.

Purton completed his treble aboard Tony Cruz’s Beauty Bolt, who stormed into Classic Mile calculations with victory in the Class Three Lukfook Jewellery Night Banquet In Tang Palace Collection Handicap (1,600m).

The Irish import capitalised on a perfect run one off in sixth, charging to the lead at the 200m before holding off the fast-finishing Max Que to score by a neck.

A Dundalk winner on his only pre-import start when racing as Thunder Song and trained by Joseph O’Brien, Beauty Bolt won on his second Hong Kong start at the end of last season and improved on a third and fourth this term to bag another success.
