Pierre Ng Pang-chi reclaimed the outright lead in the trainers’ championship with a crucial double at Sha Tin on Monday as his roller-coaster battle with Francis Lui Kin-wai continues.

Landing the latest blow in a tense tussle, Ng responded to Lui’s Happy Valley brace on Wednesday night to move to a 67-65 lead with only four meetings remaining this season.

Gangnam Star broke through for his first victory with a dominant display in the first section of the Class Five Uncompromising Integrity Handicap (1,400m), before Super Bonus overcame a tough run three wide on the speed to land his second straight win in the Class Four Guangdong-Hong Kong Cup (1,200m).

Lui came up empty-handed from Monday’s 11-race twilight fixture, with Divano’s second to dominant winner Bottomuptogether his best result.

Second-season handler Ng, 40, was thrilled with his double.

“Brilliant. I’m quite happy,” Ng said.

“At this stage, I just have to keep going. Hopefully we get more winners in the next few meetings.”

Ridden by Alexis Badel, Gangnam Star relished a drop in class to storm home from midfield and beat Precision Goal by a length and a half.

The son of Telperion showed glimpses in his 11 starts before his maiden triumph.

“He was very difficult from the start when he came to Hong Kong, so he needed time to settle down,” Ng said.

“When we tried to run him [last October] he had a heart problem, so then we had to step back again and start him later on. It’s good that he can find some confidence today to hit the front because he’s a thinker - he’s always thinking what to do and what not to do. He won well.”

Super Bonus sealed Ng’s double with a fighting victory under Andrea Atzeni, despite working hard outside of the lead from barrier 13. He hit the lead in the final 75m and held off the fast-finishing New Future Folks to score by half a length.

“Andrea told me he lost his iron out of the gates, so luckily he picked it back up,” Ng said.

“[Super Bonus] was three wide all the way, but he’s made improvement. He used to just stop or want to get away from horses in the straight, but now he’s more straightforward and finishes off hard.”

Gangnam Star was also the first leg of a double for Badel, who later produced a brilliant ride to lift Chiu Chow Spirit to victory in the Class Two Hong Kong Reunification Cup (1,400m).

After starting slowly, Badel took the Manfred Man Ka-leung-trained gelding back to last and he stormed home along the inside rail to run down pacesetter Tomodachi Kokoroe by a short head.

“When I looked up in the straight, the horse Atzeni was on [Tomodachi Kokoroe] was going very well, actually, so I stuck to the inside and my horse made the difference,” Badel said after Chiu Chow Spirit stopped the clock in 1:20.71 - the fastest 1,400m at Sha Tin this season.

“I’m very happy, Manfred has been a good supporter and I’m happy that they stuck with me on the horse and I’m happy that I could deliver.”
