Hong Kong International Races week has got off to a tragic start with the Danny Shum Chap-shing-trained Perfect Match breaking down badly at trackwork on Monday morning.
Top French jockey Alexis Badel was galloping the Hong Kong Sprint entrant with stablemate Regency Bo Bo when he suffered a fracture to his left fore leg and was humanely euthanised.
The five-year-old, who had won eight of his 17 starts, was rated a $61 chance in overseas fixed-odds markets.
Alexis Badel and Hong Kong – it’s a Perfect Match
Jimmy Ting Koon-ho’s Amazing Star will take Perfect Match’s place in the field, giving the 48-year-old his first Group One runner.
It comes just hours after confirmation all 13 international runners had arrived safely in Hong Kong for the HK$95 million event.
The Irish contingent of Magical, Mogul, Order Of Australia and Romanised – all Group One winners – were the last to fly in, landing at Hong Kong airport late on Sunday night.
