Hong Kong jockey Keith Yeung Ming-lun is being tested for the coronavirus after reporting he had “an elevated temperature and felt unwell” on Sunday night.

The Jockey Club released a statement saying the 31-year-old, who rode at Sunday’s Hong Kong Derby meeting at Sha Tin, was examined by the club’s chief medical officer who felt his temperature was normal, but took a nasal swap for analysis as a precaution.

The chief medical officer also recommended the two jockeys who were sitting closest to Yeung during the day – Derek Leung Ka-chun and Blake Shinn – do not attend trackwork on Monday morning until the results come through later in the afternoon.

The three riders will be allowed to declare for Wednesday night’s meeting at Happy Valley while the Jockey Club is committed to providing an update on the situation “in due course”.

Racing in Hong Kong has continued behind closed doors for the past two months with Jockey Club chief executive Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges doing his best to maintain “a bubble” away from the deadly outbreak by putting in extra restrictions.

“We have created a bubble and we have to keep the bubble intact,” Engelbrecht-Bresges said last week. “We won’t compromise people’s safety and our priority is to keep racing going.”

Yeung, who has five winners for the season, finished fourth in the HK$20 million Derby aboard the John Moore-trained Savvy Nine at 260-1.
