Paul O’Sullivan has kept star prospect Win Beauty Win wrapped in cotton wool so far and won’t start rushing now after the classy three-year-old jumped to the brink of Class Two with another authoritative victory on Sunday.

Win Beauty Win hadn’t been seen at the races since a dominant Griffin Trophy performance in December and made light work of his return against Class Three field that contained a clearly talented rival.

That rival was the John Size-trained New Zealand import and fellow three-year-old Hezthewonforus (Joao Moreira), who was sent out 2.2 favourite, but it was Win Beauty Win (Chad Schofield) who was thumped in betting to start 4.6.

Win Beauty Win is the first horse O’Sullivan has trained for the wealthy Kwok family and the trainer sourced the gelding himself via brother Lance’s Wexford stables.

O’Sullivan said after the race Win Beauty Win “might already be the best horse in my stable” and as such he is eyeing big future targets.

“We want to take care of him, that’s for sure and he is going to have a very light season,” O’Sullivan said.

“After that Griffin trophy win I told the owners we should give him a break and I’m glad I did. He looked great today but we might only see him at the races another three times, at most, this season. I don’t care how good they are, when a three-year-old hits Class Two they really struggle.”

Perhaps most impressive about Win Beauty Win’s effort was that the son of Makfi was resuming over a distance O’Sullivan says is well short of his best.

“On pedigree he will get a mile or further,” he said. “It did seem on the short side for him but there was some speed in the race and I thought that would help him finish over the top of them. He will go 1,400m next time and then we might try a mile before the season is out to see how he goes.”

Win Beauty Win was one of at least two winners missed through suspension by Zac Purton, who now trails Moreira by 15 in the jockeys’ championship.

Schofield rode a lovely race from barrier nine, finding a one-off spot and the favourite’s back before unleashing Win Beauty Win’s sharp sprint.

“When I let him go after a cheap run he really let rip, it was a strong finish,” Schofield said. “He is going to be a really nice horse.”
