Sam Clipperton is the main beneficiary of Joao Moreira’s absence due to suspension with the Australian jockey picking up five rides for the powerful John Size stable.
Clipperton could be in for a big day with the Size-trained quintet led by Infinity Endeavour and Calculation, plus leading Griffin Trophy contender Sparkling Dragon for Michael Freedman.
Asked to single out his best chance for the Size yard, Clipperton felt Infinity Endeavour would be hard to beat but added that Calculation was ready to fulfil the promise he had shown early in his career.
“I think the penny might have dropped for him, he has figured things out,” Clipperton said.
Calculation had just four starts as a two-year-old in Ireland before a big debut win at Sha Tin shot the gelding up nine points and to the top of Class Three.
It was a case of too much, too soon as the son of Dandy Man struggled with big weights early this term but a narrow second to Diamond Dragon two starts back and a third behind Spicy Sure on international day are signs the three-year-old is ready to breakthrough.
“He is working out his craft,” Clipperton said. “He has had every chance the last couple of starts, he hit the front and was swamped late two starts back and he cost himself the race last start by hanging in behind the leaders. The winner came around him and boxed him in. But if he can do those little things right I think he can be right in this.”
Clipperton has controlled the race from in front on Sparkling Dragon at his first two starts but after both wins the jockey has said he would prefer to sit just off the speed on the three-year-old.
He may get his chance after drawing barrier one in the Griffin Trophy but Clipperton said he would choose wisely if electing to hand up to another leader.
“I don’t want to be following an outsider, but I will just ride him by feel,” he said. “If he can get to the front and be travelling easy, I’ll let him be there, but if something wants to go too quick, I will let them go. He is an exciting prospect and going for three in a row, but he will need to bring his A game, this is a proper race.”
