Backed by all Group of 7 members, US President Joe Biden is set to unveil a “substantial” set of new sanctions aimed to cripple Russia’s ability to continue its war in Ukraine, a senior White House official said on May 18, 2023. The sanctions will target hundreds of entities that help Russia circumvent G7 measures, which were enacted after the war started. Biden said that the US and its allies will “hold Russia accountable for its aggression” in a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on the eve of the Hiroshima summit.
