US President Donald Trump says Ukraine is ready to start peace negotiations as soon as possible. During his address to a joint session of Congress on March 4, 2025, Trump read out a letter he said he received earlier in the day from his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky. The remarks followed a shock dressing down of Zelensky when he visited the White House where Trump accused him of being insufficiently grateful for US aid to Ukraine. The US then “paused” US military assistance in a bid to pressure Zelensky to engage in negotiations to end its war with Russian invasion forces.
