Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told US President Donald Trump on March 4, 2025, that Washington’s new tariffs on Canadian imports were "a very dumb thing to do" and said Ottawa was striking back immediately. Responding hours after Trump launched a trade war against Canada and Mexico, Trudeau said Ottawa would impose an immediate 25 per cent tariff on C$30 billion (US$20.8 billion) worth of US imports. He added that, if necessary, Canada would target another C$125 billion (US$86.7 billion) worth of US imports in 21 days. Under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, forged during Trump’s first administration to update the former North American Free Trade Agreement, the three countries are meant to enjoy duty-free trade.
