US President Donald Trump offered his most explicit acknowledgement of defeat in the November presidential election. Trump appeared in a video statement posted on Twitter on January 7, 2021, saying that he has turned to “ensuring a smooth, orderly and seamless transition of power”. The president said “we have just been through an intense election” and that now “tempers must be cooled and calm restored”. He also condemned the recent assault on the US Capitol by some of his supporters, saying he was “outraged by the violence, lawlessness and mayhem”.
