Since a 2014 career change, former bridal stylist Wilfred Wan has spent the last decade as a special effects make-up artist. His creative work has appeared in many Hong Kong blockbusters including the recent hit The Last Dance, which has become the city’s highest-grossing Chinese-language film. But Wan says his work has much wider applications beyond the silver screen. One example is the special effects he has created for firefighting and medical emergency drills when he simulates severe injuries such as broken bones or burns. Wan also hosts workshops to teach people basic skills for doing special effects make-up. The 39-year-old hopes his efforts to help others better understand the techniques can help attract new talent to the industry.
