Adekunbi “Kunbi” Salako moved to Hong Kong from Nigeria 12 years ago with his father. The 28-year-old has integrated into the city and picked up the Cantonese dialect spoken locally. But life in the majority Chinese city still poses challenges. Kunbi says he faces discriminatory remarks and prejudice, including some hurtful comments from people who are critical of his relationship with his girlfriend Zoe Sung, a Chinese local. In 2024, Kunbi started creating and sharing personal videos in which he speaks Cantonese. He posts them on his Instagram page, which has attracted more than 97,000 followers to date. Kunbi said he hopes to introduce African culture to people in the city, and in doing so, knock down racial barriers and stereotypes.
