The number of Hongkongers who say they want to move to mainland China has nearly doubled over the last two years, according to a recent survey published by the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The survey found that about 20 per cent of city residents were eyeing a move across the border, a significant rise from the 11 per cent recorded in a 2022 poll. Respondents said the main factors drawing them to the mainland included lower consumer prices, a better living environment and affordable housing prices. In contrast with the results, Hong Kong’s latest “liveability score” has improved since 2022.
