Hong Kong eviction authorities swooped on one of the city’s most prominent sawmills early in the morning of September 27, 2022, despite the owners’ pleas to allow more time to process valuable wood at the site. The timber-processing facility, which originally opened in 1947 before moving to a new location in 1982, was given its final notice to vacate the premises, in Hong Kong’s northern New Territories, on September 13, 2022, to make way for metropolitan development plans. They were granted several extensions to use up remaining stocks of materials, but could not finish all the work in time.
