Hong Kong was once a cinematic powerhouse until Hollywood productions eclipsed local films in theatre attendance starting in 2004. But while Hong Kong’s box office hit a 13-year low in 2024, local films outperformed foreign ones for the first time since the audience downturn. One expert said the success of films such as The Last Dance and Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In was driven by new talent as well as a demand for more realistic plots.
