Hong Kong star Nicholas Tse to renounce Canadian citizenship amid China crackdown on its celebrities

Hong Kong star Nicholas Tse says he is applying to give up his Canadian citizenship to show national spirit, amid a sweeping crackdown on the entertainment industry by the mainland Chinese government. In recent months, Beijing has been targeting misbehaving celebrities who have been accused of crimes ranging from rape, tax evasion or behaviour and speech that hurt “public order and morals”. While there is no official ban on Chinese stars holding foreign passports, many celebrities have dropped their foreign citizenship to protect their career, amid rising concerns about being viewed as unpatriotic for holding dual nationality.
