Northern Metropolis

Farming families ponder future under Hong Kong government’s Northern Metropolis plans

The Hong Kong government has presented an ambitious plan to develop land near the city’s border with mainland China into a “Northern Metropolis” which will serve as an economic and residential hub for some 2.5 million residents. The plan includes building a “technopole” in the San Tin area that is being touted as “Hong Kong’s version of Silicon Valley”. But farmers who have long made a living off the land earmarked for development are concerned about what the plans mean for them and their livelihoods.
