American photographer Austin Bell’s first visit to Hong Kong in 2017 included a stop at the Choi Hung Estate that planted the seed for a project that spanned four years from 2019-2023. Bell became obsessed with the idea of documenting all outdoor basketball courts in Hong Kong. Working against the elements – sun, wind and rain – he identified and photographed 2,549 courts. His images highlight the unique designs of the courts as well as their ubiquity and stark contrast against the city’s landscape.
