Meet Chau Ka-ling, Hong Kong’s “snake queen” and one of a handful of Hongkongers who still cook snake soup in traditional Chinese style. With over five decades of experience as a snake handler, she combines years of know-how and passion to create the signature broth at Shia Wong Hip, a restaurant that her family has run for more than two generations. The establishment in the working-class neighbourhood of Sham Shui Po is renowned for crafting soups from five types of snakes. Chau also serves up a healthy dose of stories, including one about an encounter with a king cobra on a boat. In this episode of #852stories, Chau also recounts how she learned the ropes of snake handling as a teenager and went on to even help authorities catch venomous reptiles.
