Fukushima nuclear disaster and water release

North Korea accuses Japan of bribing UN nuclear watchdog to approve Fukushima water discharge

North Korea issued a statement on July 9, 2023, condemning the UN nuclear watchdog for approving Tokyo's plan to discharge treated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant. Japan is planning to release at least 1.2 million tonnes of nuclear-tainted water into the Pacific some time in the summer, citing a recent International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report as legal justification. IAEA Director Rafael Grossi said he was “completely convinced” that the plan is safe and there is no better option to deal with the massive waste water that has collected since the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster. North Korea claims that there is no clause in international law specifying that the IAEA is entitled to allow the discharge of nuclear-polluted water.
