The Japanese government said it will start releasing treated water from the damaged Fukushima nuclear plant on August 24, 2023. The long-anticipated announcement came two days before the scheduled release and after Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visited the crippled plant and held meetings with fishing groups. Kishida said at the meeting that he would bear “ full responsibility” once treated water is released into the sea. The government had put off a final decision on when to release the treated radioactive waste water amid strong opposition at home and abroad, including from China and South Korea.
