South Korea's 'sea women’ fear their tradition will die because of the Fukushima water release

For more than 60 years, Kim Jung-ja has lived life as one of South Korea’s haenyeo or “sea women”, returning every October to the ocean. She free dives to hunt abalone, sea cucumber and other marine animals to then sell at a market. After Japan discharged the tsunami-wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant into the ocean starting on August 24, 2023, she wonders whether the centuries-old tradition will change forever.
