South Korean prosecutors have indicted impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol on charges of leading an insurrection with his brief imposition of martial law. The former leader was impeached by the opposition-led parliament on December 14, 2024. Yoon has been in solitary confinement since becoming the nation’s first sitting president to be arrested on January 15. The arrest happened after days of a defiant, armed stand-off between Yoon’s security detail and arresting officials. The South Korean leader faces charges that are punishable by life imprisonment or death.
