Japan says it started releasing the second batch of treated wastewater on October 5, 2023. The plant operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co, will release 7,800 tonnes of treated radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean over the next 17 days. Local and overseas fishing groups, as well as several countries, have voiced strong opposition to the move, which has led to a blanket ban by China on Japanese seafood imports.
