Rebuilding a city swept away by the Fukushima tsunami

The Japanese city of Minamisoma in Fukushima prefecture was devastated by the March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami. The coastal city, home to a sizable population since the times of feudal samurai, was nearly swept away in the disaster. It left hundreds dead and destroyed much of Minamisoma’s coastal neighbourhoods. Now, nearly 14 years later, the city has been rebuilt and residents like Koji Suzuki have returned to restart their lives. But ongoing controversy surrounding the release of water from the nearby nuclear plant continues to cast a dark shadow over the region’s future.
