New Year’s tuna fetches US$1.3 million in Tokyo at Toyosu fish market auction

A 276kg (608lbs) bluefin tuna was sold for US$1.3 million at Tokyo’s Toyosu fish market on January 5, 2025. The tuna was jointly bought by renowned tuna wholesaler Yamayuki and upscale Michelin sushi restaurant Sushi Ginza Onodera. The first tuna of the year is said to bring good luck and the restaurant hopes it will “bring a smile to people’s faces”. The largest tuna ever sold was in 2019, for US$3.3 million dollars.
