Japan to release emergency rice stocks as prices soar

The price of one 5 kilogram bag of rice has risen 82 per cent since 2024, according to a recent survey by the Japanese government. Concerns over the rise of a staple food amid a flagging economy have prompted the government to take unprecedented measures and release 210,000 tonnes of rice from its one million tonnes of emergency stockpiles.
