John Size will unleash a bumper squad of 11 horses at Sha Tin on Saturday as he looks to continue his strong run of recent form, with Hong Kong Derby (2,000m) entrant Enthusium one of his most fascinating runners.
The champion trainer has designs on running the British import – who won once at Carlisle from four starts in the UK when owned by King Charles – in next month’s Derby and his overseas form suggests that is not a fanciful idea.
His victory came over 1,800m and his pedigree is all stamina, so the distance is unlikely to be a problem and after some good trials since landing in Hong Kong, Size is hoping he can sneak his galloper into the final leg of the Classic Series.
“He’s had a couple of trials at Conghua that looked good enough that he could take his chance at the races,” said Size of the Dubawi galloper, who has drawn barrier 11 for his local debut in the Class Three TVB Miss Hong Kong Pageant Handicap (1,600m).
“He’s first up over the mile, so I’m not totally sure what to expect from him – obviously he’s a stayer so he’s probably looking for further than that.

“He’s only rated 70, so he’d need to be winning a race or two for us to be selected, but everyone is always aiming for the Derby. His form overseas was good but he needs to prove he’s up to it on Hong Kong form.”
Size also runs fellow Derby entry Endued in the same race, with the son of Deep Field having his 17th start in Hong Kong. He breaks from stall 10 under Andrea Atzeni.
“He looks to be in good order, he’s been racing consistently this season and has been training really well. He’s another that if he draws a good gate, he’ll be in the finish,” said Size.
Saturday’s feature is the Class Two TVB Cup (1,200m) and Size-trained Wunderbar, who has been set some very tough tasks this campaign, is an obvious chance on the downgrade.
His last run at Class Two level saw him salute at Sha Tin in June in comfortable fashion, but drawing stall 10 will be a difficult pill for Size to swallow as he steps back up to 1,200m after a fair run over the 1,000m trip last start.

“He seems in good order – he trialled nicely the other day and this looks like a suitable race for him,” said Size.
“I think the 1,000m can be a bit sharp for him; sometimes he’s been found wanting for a bit of acceleration in his races. If he draws well, he’s got a good chance.”
On a very busy day for Size, he also runs the hat-trick seeking Sight Dreamer, who has made all for a pair of easy wins on the dirt from his last two starts.
For the third straight start, the Almanzor galloper has been blessed by the draw, landing barrier one for the Class Four TVB Queen Of News Handicap (1,650m) on dirt.

“He’s a big and strong boy, he’s still in the grade after two wins and has been racing really well,” said Size. “He seems to be able to handle the dirt track really well and he has a lot of pace.
“He’s got a few things going for him and I’d imagine he’ll run another good race.”
Sight Hermoso, a two-time winner for Size this campaign, will also be looking for a change of luck in the Class Three TVB Midlife, Sing & Shine Handicap (1,000m) after an unlucky third last time out.
“He has been racing well and gets another chance to put in another good shift here. He seems to really like this course and distance so I’ve left him there for the time being and hopefully he runs well again,” said Size.
