A couple of Japan’s Longines Hong Kong International Races contenders have been given glowing report cards from Thursday’s trackwork ahead of their intended targets on Sunday’s blockbuster card at Sha Tin.

This year’s Group One Hong Kong Vase (2,400m) looks a particularly wide open affair and Urban Chic, who is one of the leading contenders for trainer Ryo Takei, was given a strong word by his handler.

Winner of the Group One Kikuka Sho (3,000m) at Kyoto earlier this year, he was last seen finishing fifth to subsequent Group One Japan Cup (2,400m) runner-up Masquerade Ball in the Group One Tenno Sho Autumn (2,000m) at Tokyo racecourse.

He has stamina in droves and Takei is liking the signals his galloper is giving off ahead of his target.

Urban Chic returns after his morning work.

“Although it was essentially a solo workout, the horse remained focused and settled well throughout,” Takei told the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

“His movement and balance were good, and he responded sharply in the final stages. Breathing was also in good condition. The jockey gave positive feedback, suggesting the horse is likely to head into the race in good shape.”

Soul Rush will have his final race start before retirement in Sunday’s Group One Hong Kong Mile and will be having his third crack at that particular contest.

Fourth to Golden Sixty in the 2023 Hong Kong Mile, he then filled out second behind Voyage Bubble 12 months ago. He has tuned up for this year’s crack contest with strong form that includes a last-start sixth in the Group One Mile Championship at Kyoto Racecourse.

“He moved nicely and responded well. His breathing was also smooth. He has the power like a monster and his difficult temperament is not very easy to handle,” said trainer Yasutoshi Ikee.

“But perhaps with more overseas experience, he has matured. In the race, the key will be how he breaks from the gate and whether he can build enough early speed to stay with the marked horses. As this will be his final race, we’re determined to end on a high note.”
