Godolphin will search for a second win in three years in Sunday’s Group One Grosser Preis von Berlin (2,400m), with King Of Conquest in a similar vein of form to Rebel’s Romance when he captured one of Germany’s midsummer highlights.
Rebel’s Romance, who is well known to Hong Kong punters after his dismissive success in May’s Group One Champions & Chater Cup (2,400m) at Sha Tin, took out the Fred Archer Stakes (2,400m) in the build up to his Grosser Preis von Berlin success and King Of Conquest enters Sunday’s Group One off the back of victory in that same Listed Newmarket contest.
The Grosser Preis von Berlin spoils have headed abroad in the past three years and England’s King Of Conquest is one of two raiders with designs on the loot, with Joseph O’Brien bringing Al Riffa across from Ireland.
While he’s not won in nearly two years, form doesn’t come a whole lot better than Al Riffa’s last-start second to Epsom Derby sensation City Of Troy in the Group One Coral-Eclipse (1,990m) at Sandown.
Epic finish! 😱

The Andreas Suborics-trained Best Of Lips is among the five local runners and the six-year-old enters the race in good form.
“Despite giving weight, Best Of Lips won well at [Group Three] level last time [beating the reopposing Tunnes and Mr Hollywood]. That was his best form since he won Cologne’s [Group Two] Union-Rennen three years ago,” Suborics said.
“That’s why we decided to supplement him for this. His preparation has gone really well, and I fully expect him to finish in the first three, even though Al Riffa will be hard to beat.”
The Grosser Preis von Berlin is one of four races from Hoppegarten to be simulcast by the Jockey Club on Sunday, while Hong Kong punters can also climb into eight races from Deauville in France.
INSPIRING! ❤️💙

The Group One Prix Jacques le Marois (1,600m) highlights the Deauville card and Inspiral is back seeking an unprecedented third consecutive success in the contest, which is the jewel in the crown of Deauville’s month-long racing festival.
Frankie Dettori inspired John and Thady Gosden’s contender to wins in the 1,600m showpiece in 2022 and 2023.
But, with Dettori now based in the United States and Inspiral yet to shine as a five-year-old, it will be some training feat if she manages to pull off a remarkable hat-trick.
While Kieran Shoemark has replaced Dettori as the Gosden’s number one man and has ridden Inspiral in her past two defeats, owners Cheveley Park Stud have opted to hand the reins to Ryan Moore for Sunday’s race.

Inspiral faces a pair of recent Royal Ascot winners in Charyn (Group One Queen Anne Stakes (1,600m)), who will be ridden by Silvestre de Sousa, and Haatem (Group Three Jersey Stakes (1,400m)), while France’s hopes are carried by smart three-year-old Metropolitan, winner of the French 2,000 Guineas, and Big Rock.
Big Rock enjoyed a superb three-year-old campaign and was runner-up to Inspiral in this race last year, but has failed to fire so far since switching stables from Christopher Head to Maurizio Guarnieri.
Metropolitan is taking on his elders for the first time and trainer Mario Baratti has high hopes.
“Metropolitan is a horse that doesn’t stop improving,” he told French racing newspaper Paris Turf.
“His last two races were really very good. He has to show his form again, but he has the right to fight for victory. He has taken his race at Ascot well and is in very good physical condition.”
