Following the talented Limitless has been a tough task for punters but they should give him one more turn when he lines up for the Hong Kong Reunification Cup (1,400m) on Saturday at Sha Tin.

Although Limitless (Zac Purton) won a race for Peter Ho Leung earlier in the term, he has mostly not lived up to expectations and it has all been his own fault.

Limitless over-raced even with a fast pace the day he did win over the Sha Tin 1,400m and again in the Classic Cup and Derby when the tempo was solid enough and this has been a serious issue with him, especially in a number of his other runs when pace was not so generous.

Two months ago, Limitless switched yards to Caspar Fownes and did seem a little better when he finished second to Beat The Clock at his first run for the stable.

He still over-raced but that was in a tempo where that behaviour was forgivable, a slow tempo when plenty of others also weren’t suited.

Despite that, Limitless produced a strong final sectional that showed yet again he has terrific engine if only he can relax and Saturday’s race might set up to help him to do that, more so than the race won by Beat The Clock.

Although it may be that not many horses are pushing forward looking for the front, it seems two of them, newcomer Saul’s Special (Jack Wong Ho-nam) and Almababy (Vincent Ho Chak-yiu), have drawn wide and could manufacture a decent speed in the race.

Because Limitless pulls against his riders, Purton will have no option but to go back to the rear on the gelding, but having a smoother pace up front gives him more chance of having Limitless comfortable in running.

Joao Moreira sets his sights on finishing the season with 175 winners

If he can do that, Limitless will be too strong for the horses at the end of the race, even if he has to give them five lengths from the top of the lane.

His danger looks to be Mongolian King (Umberto Rispoli), who himself reeled off a strong final 400m winning his Class Three last time out.

He will be in front of Limitless but only somewhere just ahead of him so he will need to repeat that finish to hold him off, but he does also have a weight pull to help with that.

My Darling (Joao Moreira) is hard to fault with his very solid record and he will be in a great position in running, and almost certainly the first challenger to the leaders, but has crept to the top of the weights now and needs to improve again.
