Top of any list of black bookers from Sunday’s racing had to be the Class Four sprint quinella of Momentum Lucky and Molly’s Jade Star, but there are a couple to like for the near future that were buried more deeply under the surface too.
Strong time, a good spread of margins and just a general argument for upside made three-year-old Momentum Lucky a horse headed for Class Two, while year older Molly’s Jade Star is now living up to the promise he showed in his early trials and is probably the best maiden racing in Hong Kong based on this.
Less obvious was Rouge Et Blanc in the Class Four over 1,800m. He has had no luck so far this season, has become attractively rated and again on Sunday the race didn’t pan out perfectly. An early squeeze ensured he raced at the tail of the field in an event won from the front by Beauty Love, chased home by Midnite Promise from the box seat.
Nevertheless, Rouge Et Blanc was closing off the race well down the straight when he struck minor bother twice, he should have finished a little closer and is just looking for a race with a few breaks his way.
In the second last, Globe Trotter finished ninth in the Class Three at odds of 522-1 but don’t let that put you off his prospects in the coming weeks as he drops a grade.
From the outside gate, Globe Trotter’s speed was used to get him across to the lead on the rail and, for a horse so little fancied, that effort should have been enough for the white flag of surrender to be hoisted soon after straightening for home.
But Globe Trotter was still battling away in the finish with the first two placegetters, Midnight Rattler and Tonyboy, with 200m to run, still third at the 100m and finally beaten only one and a half lengths by the third placegetter. In another Class Three, Globe Trotter might still be lengthy odds but with Class Four beckoning, it could be different.
