Syrians are starting to uncover mass graves across the country, shedding light on the magnitude of atrocities committed during the rule of ousted leader Bashar al-Assad. An international war crimes prosecutor said on December 17, 2024, that evidence emerging from mass gravesites in Syria exposed a state-run “machinery of death”. The prosecutor estimated that more than 100,000 people had been tortured and murdered since 2013.
