Syria’s future remains uncertain with several different rebel groups controlling various parts of the country. The fall of the Assad regime was brought about by the sudden advance of the most powerful of those groups, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). Although HTS has taken over Syria's main cities, it does not control the entire country. For years, many areas have been held by a patchwork of rebel groups.
