Governments and officials from around the world have been reacting to the sudden fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria on December 8, 2024. China’s foreign ministry said Beijing is monitoring developments closely and hopes Syria returns to stability soon. US President Joe Biden said the sudden collapse of the Assad regime was a “fundamental act of justice” after decades of repression, but created “a moment of risk and uncertainty” for the Middle East. Israel responded by sending forces to take control of the Syrian side of Mount Hermon in the Golan Heights, saying its troops are now engaged on “four fronts”. United Nations special envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen called the developments “a watershed moment in Syria’s history”.
