Qatar and the United States announced on January 15, 2025, a ceasefire and hostage-release deal between Israel and Hamas. Negotiators expressed the hope the deal would pave the way for a permanent end to the fighting. Both sides have hailed the deal. While Israel called it the “right move”, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said “final details” were still being ironed out. Under the agreement, 33 hostages would be freed and Israeli forces would withdraw from Gaza during an initial 42-day ceasefire.
