Eid festivities dampened by economic, political concerns in Indonesia, India

As Muslims worldwide celebrate Eid ul-Fitr, the festivities in some corners of Asia have been tempered by political, economic and humanitarian concerns

It has been a subdued Eid ul-Fitr in some parts of Asia for Muslims celebrating one of the year’s biggest holidays. In Indonesia, travel and consumer spending as of March 2025 were down amid economic headwinds. Muslims in India continued to face efforts, criticised as discriminatory, to change rules regarding Muslim land endowments. Meanwhile in Gaza, Palestinians have again been forced to flee amid renewed air strikes by Israeli forces after a ceasefire in the war broke down.
