Canada expelled Chinese diplomat Zhao Wei on May 8, 2023, after an intelligence report accused the Toronto-based envoy of trying to target Michael Chong, a Conservative Party Member of Parliament. The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) issued a report detailing alleged threats from China directed at Chong and his family in Hong Kong. In 2021, Chong sponsored a successful motion for parliament to declare that China’s treatment of its Uygur Muslim minority amounted to genocide.
