Canada announced plans on August 27, 2024, to impose new tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles, aluminium and steel. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described the move as a bid to align Canada’s trading system with its allies and an attempt to protect domestic manufacturers. Trudeau said his government would impose 100 per cent import taxes on electric vehicles starting on October 1, while 25 per cent levies on aluminium and steel would take effect on October 15. Canada’s actions followed moves by the United States and the European Union to impose similar import tariffs on Chinese EVs.
