China has denounced the US decision to impose an additional tariff on Chinese imports. In a February 2, 2024, statement, China’s Ministry of Commerce called the unilateral tariff hikes a serious violation of World Trade Organization (WTO) rules. US President Donald Trump on February 1 signed an executive order imposing a 10 per cent tariff on Chinese imports. Trump said it was a response to what he described as Beijing’s failure to stem the flow into the US of precursor chemicals used to make the drug fentanyl. China said it will file a claim with the WTO and take corresponding measures to safeguard its interests. Trump has also announced a 25 per cent tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, and both countries have vowed to retaliate.
