United Nations representatives from 175 nations have endorsed a landmark agreement to end plastic pollution. The resolution, approved at the fifth UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-5) in Nairobi, Kenya on March 2, 2022, addresses the full life cycle of plastic, from source to sea, and sets plans to forge a legally binding international agreement by 2024. Inger Andersen, executive director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), said the historic agreement is the most important international multilateral environmental deal since the Paris climate accord, an international treaty on climate change signed in 2015.
