China has sent emergency relief crews to the eastern province of Shandong and the central Henan province where severe drought threatens nearly 300 million people. A level-4 emergency response was launched on June 12, 2024, and officials have warned of crop damage. In recent weeks, extreme heat has persisted across a wide area, with rainfall down as much as 50 per cent from normal in some regions.
