Riverbeds crack as Chinese farmers struggle through intense heatwave

Weeks of scarce rainfall and sweltering heat have brought drought to several Chinese provinces including Shandong, a major agricultural centre. Multiple farmers said the unseasonably early drought may cause extensive crop damage. The provincial capital of Jinan issued its highest heat alert in early June 2024, as temperatures looked set to break historical records for the month. President Xi Jinping called for all-out efforts to respond to the drought in the northern provinces, as well as severe floods in the nation’s south.
